Lesson 2: Developing VR Scenarios for ABA Educator Training
Selecting appropriate VR scenarios and activities for ABA involves understanding the efficacy of VR interventions and the protocols that enhance their application. Emerging work with virtual reality leads us to believe that it can improve ABA outcomes by providing immersive, controlled environments for behavior modification. Since its immersive nature allows for the simulation of real-life scenarios, it can enhance learning and provide more naturalistic environments for practice. Virtual reality scenarios also lend themselves to structured protocols, which align well with ABA principles, which are based on descriptions of technological procedures.

While VR presents promising avenues for ABA, it is important to consider the variability of individual responses to VR scenarios, which may require customized approaches to maximize effectiveness.
Steps and guidelines for selecting VR scenarios that align with ABA protocols
Define target behaviors or skills
- Identify specific skills or behaviors you want to focus on, such as social skills, communication, daily living skills, safety awareness, or handling anxiety-provoking situations, as well as challenging behaviors that need to be decreased (e.g., aggression, self-harm, destruction of property, or disruptive behaviors).
- Ensure that the target behaviors are measurable and observable, as this is crucial for the ABA.
Select VR scenarios that simulate real-world contexts
- Choose VR scenarios that closely mimic the real-life environments where the target behavior occurs (e.g., a classroom for social skills training, a grocery store for daily living skills, or a street for teaching safety).
- Ensure that scenarios provide realistic and immersive experiences that can effectively simulate the natural contingencies of the environment.

Ensure opportunities for repeat practice and feedback
- Virtual reality scenarios should allow for repeated practice of the target behavior with opportunities for reinforcement and corrective feedback.
- Consider scenarios that can be easily reset or repeated, allowing the client to practice skills without real-world consequences (e.g., practicing crossing the street safely without actual danger).
Consider Customization and Adaptability
- Look for VR environments that can be customized or adjusted to match the client’s specific skill level, preferences, and learning objectives.
- Scenarios should be adaptable in difficulty and complexity, allowing you to increase or decrease task demands as needed.
Incorporate ABA- based strategies
- Use VR scenarios that support discrete trial training, task analysis, shaping, prompting, and fading strategies, ensuring that the scenario can be adapted to these evidence-based ABA techniques.
- Select activities that allow for data collection on the frequency, duration, and accuracy of specific behaviors within the VR environment.
Select scenarios that facilitate generalization
- Choose VR activities that promote generalization of skills to real-world environments by varying scenarios, prompts, and the types of stimuli used.
- Ensure that the VR environment allows for the inclusion of multiple examples and natural reinforcement to improve generalization.
